Harvey Beard, 99, of Redfield, SD passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Redfield Community Memorial Hospital. His funeral service will be Saturday, February 10, 2018 at United Methodist Church of Redfield at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Marty Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Eastern Star Home Chapel. Family will be present during this time to accept condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Marion Harvey Beard was born June 5, 1918 in Harmony Township, Frankfort, SD to John & Anna (Torkelson) Beard. He spent his childhood and youth on various farms near Frankfort. Harvey entered the Army Air Force on June 25, 1941 at Ft. Snelling, MN. Harvey served during World War II and was stationed in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, and Rome during his service. Harvey honorably discharged from Miami Beach, FL on September 22, 1945.
Harvey returned to the Redfield area and farmed various land before purchasing his own farm north of Tulare in 1955. Harvey also worked for Peterson Implement and trucked for Heuther's hauling cattle.
Harvey married the love of his life, Aletha "Pinky" Nelson on March 30, 1951 at Redfield. The couple raised three children. The couple began wintering in Apache Junction, AZ in 1985 and continued until Pinky's health no longer allowed. Pinky passed away August 27, 2008. Harvey remained in his home until September 2014 when he moved to Eastern Star Assisted Living.
Harvey enjoyed Bingo, having coffee with friends, spending time with his family, and in his last years talking with his Eastern Star staff and friends.
Harvey was a member of the United Methodist Church of Redfield, the American Legion, and the VFW. Harvey and Pinky were also members of the Good Sams Camping Club for several years.
Harvey is survived by his daughter Sandra (Jeff) Wagner of Redfield, SD; and his sons: Loren Beard of Harrisburg, SD, and Brian (Cindy) Beard of Aberdeen, SD. He is also survived by five granddaughters and six great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pinky; brothers: Kermit, Leonard, Alvin and Dean; infant granddaughter Courtney Wagner (1977), and daughter-in-law Suz Beard (2/1/18).
The family requests memorials be made to Eastern Star Home or Kennedy Tomsha Memorial Scholarship at Hitchcock-Tulare High School.
