Willard Franklin Schwartz, 89, Redfield, SD, died Friday, December 8, 2017 at Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redfield, SD.  His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday December 14, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Redfield, SD.  Reverend Tom Anderson will officiate.  Military honors will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Rockham Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 13, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home.  Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.  (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com).

In Lieu of flowers, the family prefers monetary donations to start a Willard Schwartz Scholarship.  The family also requests attendees to wear Minnesota Viking or Twins clothing attire or casual dress.

Willard Franklin Schwartz was born September 23, 1928 in Miller, SD to Franklin Willard Schwartz and Henrietta (Throop) Schwartz.  He grew up on the family farm in Rockham and attended grade school there. Willard graduated from Redfield High School. 

After Graduation he joined the United States Army.  After his military service he moved back to the farm in Rockham, SD. Willard married Doris Barrie on August 12, 1954 at the Catholic Church in Turton, SD.  Willard and Doris lived on various farms around the Rockham and Miranda area.  In 1994, they moved to Redfield, SD where they shared their home until moving to the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in 2017.

He loved farming, and fishing and was active in sports.  Willard’s hobbies included softball, coaching sports, watching the Twins & Vikings as well as the Redfield Pheasants.  Willard also enjoyed spending time with and supporting his grandchildren in their sporting activities.

Willard is survived by his wife Doris; his children: Tamara (Bill) Pierce, Aberdeen, SD, Wade (Sandy) Schwartz, Pat (Rob) Isaacson, Larry Schwartz, Sheree Levtzow, Frank (Anna) Schwartz, Sara Schwartz,  Mary Betten, all of  Redfield, SD. He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Shannon and Shirley (Jack) Davis.  He is also survived by his Grandchildren Ryan (Ashley) Pierce, Whispering Pines, NC, Brooke Pierce, Sioux Falls, SD, Cory (Angie) Schwartz, Pierre, SD, Michael (Courtney) Schwartz, Ashton, SD, Tracy (Chad) Resel, Wessington, SD, Dustin (Jessica) Schwartz, Pierre, SD, AJ (Becca) Isaacson, Wood, SD Gregory (Theresa) Levtzow, Rockham, SD, Brandi (Scott) Pekarek, Highmore, SD, Jake (Jess) Levtzow, Rockham, SD, Roni (Colton) Levtzow, Ashton, SD,  Austin Schwartz, Rapid City, SD, Jordan (Tosha) Schwartz, Ipswich, SD, Sean (Jaime) Schwartz, Aberdeen, SD, Tyler (Sarah) Schwartz, Ipswich, SD, Jon (Erin) Betten, Redfield, SD and Bradley Betten, Robbinsdale, MN.  Willard is  also survived by 34 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son Todd, and sisters Alice Gigax and Betty Reed and a brother Tom Eaton.
