Avis Dorethy (Hausvik) Hansen, 92, died peacefully at Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD on June 26, 2019, surrounded by her family. She enjoyed making her home the last four years at Trail Ridge Assisted Living, Sioux Falls, after moving from her home in Redfield, SD, in 2015.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Redfield. Reverend Peter M. Utecht will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Frankfort, SD.
Visitation will be Friday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Avis Dorethy Hausvik was born on a farm near Turton, SD, on August 4, 1926, to Martin and Emma (Hall) Hausvik; she was the sixth out of 10 children. She attended Turton Public School for grades 1-12, graduating from high school in 1944. She attended Northern State University to obtain her teaching certificate and then taught in a rural school southeast of Conde, SD.
Avis was united in marriage to Leo Jurgen Hansen on September 18, 1947. Following their marriage, they farmed northeast of Frankfort, where they raised four children: Shirley, Joanne, Russell, and Chris.
After retiring from the farm, Leo and Avis moved to Redfield and wintered annually in Mesa, AZ, where they made many friends and traveled extensively. Avis was a talented china and oil painter. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family gatherings. She loved flowers and spent many hours tending her flower gardens as well as painting beautiful flowers.
She was a long-standing member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Doland until she and Leo moved to Redfield in 1979, when she became a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She was a member of the local Red Hat group, a member of the Turton VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Doland Study Club, and an active member of the SD and National China Painters Association.
She is survived by her three children: Shirley (Randy) Hansen of Sioux Falls; Joanne (James Janke) Reiner of Sioux Falls; and Chris Hansen of Redfield; and eight grandchildren: Tara (Sam) Hansen-Leinen of Sioux Falls; Justin Hansen of Sioux Falls; Matthew Reiner of Tripp, SD; Ryan (Kristin) Reiner of Sioux Falls; Jared (Jen) Reiner of Edina, MN; Joshua (Karen) Hansen of Colorado Springs, CO; Jeff Hansen of Frankfort; and Jill Hansen of Sioux Falls. Avis was lovingly known as GG (Great Grandma) to her 14 great-grandchildren: Annika, Davis, and Eliza McCallum; Britney Leinen; Jorgen, Josephine, and Karsten Hansen; Rustin and Ben Hansen; Reese, Luke, and Liam Reiner; and Nora and Bennett Reiner. She is also survived by her sister Clarice Hausvik Seaman of Rapid City, SD; three sisters-in-law: Lila Hansen of Turton; Rita Gisi of Aberdeen, SD; and Jody Hausvik of New Brighton, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leo (October 1992); son Russell (October 1993); one sister (Marion); and seven brothers (Orval, Clarence, Marvin, Lloyd, Robert, Rodney, and James).
