Nellie Irene Smith was born on February 15, 1919 in Gann Valley, SD to Frank and Mae (Marshall) Henrichsen. She and her three siblings grew up in Gann Valley before the family moved to Pierre, SD. Irene met her loving husband, George Smith and the two were married on June 28, 1939 in Pierre. To this union, their son, Dennis, was born. George and Irene lived and worked in the Pierre area before they moved to Glenham, SD in the early 1940’s. In Glenham, Irene helped her husband on the farm and cooked for the children at the Glenham School.

Irene was known for her passion for decorating, making her house feel like a home, especially for the holidays. Her home was always adorned with festive décor, some of which was handmade. Irene loved tatting doilies, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and other needlework. She was also fond of reading, spending time with her grandchildren, and attending all their activities.

Irene is survived by her son, Dennis (Linda) Smith of Tulare, SD; her grandchildren: Shannon (Tim) Ziemer of Casselton, ND; Erin Smith of Eau Clare, WS; and Brandon (Tonya) Smith of Aberdeen, SD; and her great-grandchildren: Samuel and Andrew Ziemer; and Shay and Von Smith. Irene is also survived by her sister, Phyllis DeJong of Huron, SD, and several nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1993; her sister, Wilma Anderson; and her brother, Glen Henrichsen.
