Jessie A. Watson

November 2, 1937 ~ September 20, 2019 (age 81)

Jessie A. Watson, 81, Huron, SD and formerly of Redfield, SD, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.  His Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield.  Reverend Peter M. Utecht will officiate.  Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.  Lunch will follow at Shanty Haven in Redfield.  Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Jessie A. Watson was born on November 2, 1937, on a farm near Moro, Arkansas to Delbert and Cara Belle (Faughn) Watson.  He grew up on the farm helping his dad growing cotton and rice.  In 1958 he moved to Orient, SD to help his Aunt care for his grandfather who had his leg amputated.  Jessie worked on various farms in the Orient area.  While there he met Darlene Schroeder and they were married in 1960 at Wecota, SD, where Jessie was employed on a farm. 

In 1965 Jessie and Darlene and their 4-year-old son Daniel moved back to Orient and purchased the Café and Hotel in Orient, operating them until 1976.  While in Orient Jessie worked for Cenex.  A daughter Dorajean was born in 1966 and a son David in 1972. 

Jessie was transferred to the Cenex station in Chelsea, SD and moved to Chelsea in 1976.   In 1982 the Watson family moved to Redfield, where Jessie worked as a mechanic in his own repair shop and he worked as a janitor at SDDC.  In 1985 he took over maintenance at the Village and Circle Drive Apartments, retiring in October 2015, serving 27 years there.

Jessie is survived by his wife Darlene of 59 years; his sons: Daniel Watson, Evansville, WY; David (Diane) Watson, Northville, SD; and his daughter Dorajean (Marvin) Wipf, Cavour, SD.  He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jenna (Brent) Adams, Dana and Shawna Wipf, Katey, Cierra, Dani Jo, and Darien Watson, Jessica Burger, Josh Davis, and Joe Anderson and five great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild to be born soon.

Jessie was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.
