Katherine “Kay” Emma (Rew) Buss, 88, of Redfield, SD, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. Her memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Eastern Star Chapel. Reverend Tammy Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Private inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Katherine Emma (Rew) Buss (also known as Kay or Sal) was the second of eight children born to George Robert and Harriett Ellen (Sutherland) Rew. She was born October 31, 1929 in Davison County on a farm a few miles from Mitchell, SD near Graceland Cemetery. She spent her early years as a farmer’s daughter and assisted in raising six brothers and sisters while attending rural elementary schools and graduating from Mitchell High School. After graduating from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD in 1950, she had a challenging and busy personal and professional life. Her career started as a Camp Nurse at Lake Poinsett, SD where she met her future husband. In 1950, she was united in marriage to Curtis Buss at Lake Poinsett, SD. They became the parents of four boys, Gerry, Raymond, Michael and William. In addition to raising four boys and managing a home as she and Curt lived in various locations in and near Redfield, SD, she worked part time at Redfield Community Hospital. While living on a farm a few miles from Redfield, she worked full time at Redfield State School. She retired after a long and rewarding career as a Registered Nurse. Following her retirement and the death of her husband Curtis, she moved to a home in Redfield until moving to the Eastern Star Home of South Dakota in Redfield. During retirement, she continued to broaden her horizons through avid reading and visiting with her family and many friends. She occupied her spare time with her various hobbies until her vision failed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Curtis; two sons: Raymond and Michael; and two grandchildren.
She is survived by sons Gerry (Eileen) of Newark, DE and William (Cheri) of Redfield, SD; two daughters-in-law Donna Buss of Denver, CO and Trish Buss of Clovis, CA; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her six brothers and sisters.
