Leona Sirena Kempe was born December 4, 1920 in Faulk County, SD to Charles and Elma (Hagen) Kempe.  She grew up on the family farm at Miranda, SD and attended grades one through eight at Sieveres Country School.  In 1938, she graduated from Rockham High School and became a registered nurse when she earned her RN Degree from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1942.

On April 29, 1954, Leona married Milton R. Becker on the family farm in Miranda.  They made their home on the Becker family farm until 2011 when she moved to Redfield.  She was a resident of the Eastern Star Home for the last two and a half years of her life.

Caring for others was her gift.  She was a wife, mother, housewife, RN, and caregiver to many.  As a nurse, she worked, both full-time and part-time, at the Miller Hospital and Miller Clinic from 1942 through 1989.  In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, sewing, reading, and playing piano.  She was a proud 50+ year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of Ladies Aid.

Grateful for sharing her life are her son James (Julie) Becker of Rockham; daughter Jean (Mike) Angerhofer of Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren:  Janelle (Jay) Olson of Garretson, SD; John (Melissa) Becker of Rockham; Joshua (Heidi) Becker of Tulare, SD; Charles Angerhofer, Thomas Angerhofer, and David Angerhofer, all of Aberdeen.  She is also survived by great-grandchildren:  Jorja and Jace Olson; Nicholas, Christopher, and Joseph Becker; Case, Miranda, Lydia, and Caleb Becker; and Cashlyn and Rhian Angerhofer; as well as two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton, in March 2002; great-granddaughter Lexy Becker; and both brothers.
