Letha Jay Kopplin was born on February 9, 1945 in Huron, SD along with her twin sister Leota (Kopplin) Vance to Milton Sr. and Ruby (Harms) Kopplin.

Letha grew up on a farm east of Tulare, SD with her parents and five siblings.  She attended Tulare School and graduated in 1963.  She attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and graduated with a degree in K-8 Elementary Education.

On December 17, 1966, in Mitchell, SD, she married Thomas Gallup of Redfield, SD.  They initially resided in Tulare for ½ a year while Letha taught Kindergarten immediately after graduation from NSU.  They then resided in Redfield.  She taught 4th Grade for 36 years and finished her career teaching Jr. High math for three years until she retired.  The impact she made on her students over those 39 years is unfathomable.  She was highly regarded by her students and her peers.  She was adamant on two things: “Anything worth doing is worth doing well” and “above everything else, we are HONEST!”

Letha loved spending time with her family, whether it be working the multiple businesses she and Tom owned or spending time at their cabin at Cottonwood Lake.  Another love was the Chicago Cubs baseball team, especially their late announcer, Harry Caray.  In her later years, she adopted a French bulldog named Gertie who was a breeding rescue.  Gertie was her world in the later years while Tom was still employed.  Another love of Letha’s was watching the “Golden Girls” on TV.

Letha is survived by her husband Thomas Gallup of Redfield; her daughter Jolene Gallup of Chandler, AZ; and her daughter Gerri Gallup (son-in-law Greg Roggenthen) of Frankfort, SD.  She is also survived by all of her siblings:  brother Milton Jr. (Dorothy) Kopplin of Tulare; sister Reta Rose Nelson of Madison, SD; sister Joan Trenhaile of Brookings, SD; twin sister Leota Vance of Brookings; brother Bruce (Anita) Kopplin of Hitchcock, SD as well as her brother-in-law Dick (Marjorie) Gallup; numerous nieces and nephews and nine fur-grandbabies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Ruby Kopplin of Tulare; her brothers-in-law:  Gary Nelson, Bob Vance, Dave Gallup and her beloved Gertie.
