Mary Angela Gruenwald was born on November 15, 1933, in rural Spink County, to Joseph and Matilda (Leitner) Gruenwald.  She attended school at St. Mary’s in Zell and graduated from Mount Marty High School in 1951.  She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1954.  On December 28, 1954, she married Dick Edgar at St. Bernard’s Church in Redfield.

They made their home on a farm north of Rockham, SD.  She and Dick shared 60 years of marriage prior to his death on January 3, 2015.  She worked many years as a Registered Nurse at the Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.  She enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers.  She also collected teapots and was an avid reader.

Mary looked forward to the lunches with her retired nursing and hospital friends.  She enjoyed attending Angus Day at the SD State Fair with Dick as well as many other cattle shows, including one of their favorites; the Commercial Heifer Show at the Black Hills Stock Show.

Family was an important part of Mary’s life.  She enjoyed hosting holiday meals and also the pheasant season opener.  She loved planning the meal for the annual bull sale.  Everyone from cattlemen to agronomists knew that if they stopped by at noon they would have a great meal.  She especially enjoyed making breakfast for the guys each morning as they planned their day.

She is survived by seven children: Janet (Jerry) Eaton of Redfield, Joanie (Dan) Gronso of Fargo, ND, Mark (Pam) Edgar of Rockham, Bruce (Leslie) Edgar of Rockham, Chris (Rod) Pater of Sioux Falls, SD, Carrie (Jeff) Gutenkauf of Pierre, SD and Jill (Roger) Nikolas of Sioux Falls; 20 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brother Ignatius Gruenwald of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandson Mathew Eaton, and great granddaughter Ava Edgar.  Also preceding her in death were her siblings: Myron, Jerome, James, and Giles Gruenwald and Agatha Sherman.
