The children of Mary Elaine Rahm share the sorrowful news of the passing of their beloved mother. Mary “Elaine” (Remily) Rahm, 91, of Brookings, SD, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Turton, SD. Reverend Michael Kelly will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Turton.
Visitation will be Friday, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD. A prayer service and rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Chaplain John Miles officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Mary Elaine Remily was born, the fifth of 11 children, on November 10, 1926 in Doland, SD to Julian and Myrtle (Fortin) Remily. She grew up with her large family on a farm near Doland. She attended rural schools near Turton and Doland and graduated from Doland High School in 1944. After graduation, she took home business courses and worked for local grocery retailers.
On June 19, 1946, she married Russell Starr. Following his untimely death, she worked at the Security State Bank in Doland until her marriage to Albert (Bert) Rahm on May 16, 1949. She and Bert lived on the same farm west of Turton throughout their married life and it was there that they raised five children. Albert passed away on August 21, 1992.
She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She also remained actively involved with the family farm along with her son, Curtis, until 2014. At the time of her death, she resided at “The Neighborhoods” long term care facility in Brookings.
Elaine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, and four sisters: Lila Miles, Lorene Haney, Dorothy Hagerty and Marvel Mann.
She is survived by her children: Cheryl Rahm-McGrath, of Sioux Falls, SD, Carleen (Bruce) Dixon of Brookings, Curtis (Patty) Rahm of Turton, Carmen (Linda) Rahm of Kent, WA and Christopher Rahm of Aberdeen, SD; two sisters: Gladys Bowman of Inverness, FL and Rachel Coats of Rapid City, SD; and two brothers: Marvin Remily of Doland and Maurice Remily of Rapid City. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
