Maxine Irene (Jungwirth) Pfister Schmidt, 81, of Redfield, SD, went to be with her Lord on February 26, 2019, after a long battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial for Maxine Pfister Schmidt will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. Reverend Tom Anderson will officiate. Inurnment will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Maxine Irene Jungwirth was born on October 11, 1937, in Belle Fourche, SD to Norbert and Henrietta (Esser) Jungwirth. At the age of 5, Maxine and her family moved to Zell, SD. She graduated from Redfield High School and married Merton Lyle Pfister on October 23, 1954. They had five children and lived and worked in Redfield until Merton passed away in 1979.
Maxine graduated from Lake Area Vo Tech as an LPN in 1978. She worked at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield and worked in the courthouse with Cleo Lewis, the first Spink County Public Health Nurse. She attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Dakota Wesleyan in 1982, earning her Registered Nurse status.
In addition to her career in Redfield, Maxine worked in Sioux Falls, Deadwood and eventually spent 20 years at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Hospital. Maxine moved back to Redfield in 2009.
Grateful for sharing life with her for the past nine years is her husband David Schmidt who she married on May 26, 2010.
Maxine was very devoted and passionate about her career in Nursing. She was a thoughtful, loving, caring and giving person to all who knew her. The patients she cared for and worked with appreciated her optimistic personality and her beautiful smile. Maxine was a creative person, with a love for life. She enjoyed the outside, working in the garden, dancing, fishing and especially spending time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merton Pfister, and her brother James Jungwirth.
Maxine is survived by her husband David; her children: Cindy (Doyle) Tubandt, Marty (Tina) Pfister, Michele (Roy Amor) Pfister, Michael (Betty Sanchez) Pfister and Colin (Beth) Pfister; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews and her sister LuAnn Keating.
