Russell Dean Johnsen, 64, of Tulare, SD, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. His funeral service will be on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate. A private burial will follow at a later date.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 29, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hyke Funeral Home. Family will be present at 6:00 p.m. to receive condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Russell Dean Johnsen was born October 19, 1954 in Redfield to Marvin & Donna (Marlow) Johnsen. He grew up in the Redfield area, graduating from Redfield High School in 1972. On December 14, 1974, Russell married his high school sweetheart Sherrie Igo at the United Methodist Church in Redfield. To this union one son, Jason, was born.
He started working for SD Wheat Growers when he was in high school, retiring after thirty-five years. He then went to work for Beckler Construction for five years, and then Steinheuser Farms retiring in 2018.
Family was extremely important to Russell and he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for being a gentle giant with a big heart who never raised his voice. His family is very proud of him and will always treasure their wonderful memories. In his spare time, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, and camping.
Russell is survived by Sherrie his wife of forty four years; his son Jason (Jackie) Johnsen and their children, Keaton and Khloe of Sioux Falls; his mother, Donna Johnsen of Tulare, SD; his sister Cindy (Bill) Ellis, of Lincoln, NE and his sister-in-law Dora Mae (Steve) Prasek of Selby, SD.
He is preceded in death by his father Marvin Johnsen and mother and father-in-law Mae and Lowell Igo.
