Andrew Gabriel Jr., 101, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Redfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Christopher Hughes will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6-7:00 p.m. to accept condolences. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorial be made to the Community Memorial Hospital foundation in his memory.
Andrew was born March 11, 1912, at Onaka, SD, to Andrew Sr. and Magdalena ( Winderhholt) Gabriel. He was raised and educated in Onaka. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Catherine V. Stappler on November 21, 1945 to that union five children were born.
Andrew bought and ran Goetz bar in Onaka until moving to Redfield in 1954, to become a tractor mechanic at Redfield Service Motor. After several years he started working for Spink County as the Janitor at the Courthouse. He remained working there until he retired. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting, but really enjoyed going to Las Vegas almost yearly for several years. Andrew entered the Golden Living Center in 2009, where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his children: Karen (Marv) Nelson of Watertown, Randall (Dena) Gabriel of Ft. Pierre, Chuck Gabriel of Aberdeen and Don (Sonja) Gabriel of Redfield; 14 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Leroy and two daughters- in-law: Lana and Deb; two grandchildren; five brothers: Martin, John, Roy, Mike and Frank; five sisters: Claudia, Margaret, Eva, Rose and Frances.
