Argie Esther (Schmidt) Joyce-Buss was born September 9, 1924 to Fred William and Elsie Avis (Pierce) Schmidt in Hand County on the family farm south of Rockham, SD. This home had previously been occupied by her grandparents, Fred and Anna Schmidt. For eight years she attended a small country school that was close to their family home, so she walked to school. She attended high school in Rockham and graduated in 1942. Following graduation, she moved to San Diego, CA and married the love of her life, Don Joyce, on July 16, 1942 in La Mesa, CA.

She continued living and working in California and Oregon until Don was deployed to the South Pacific with the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. At that time she moved to Redfield and worked at the bakery and the First National Bank as a bookkeeper until Don returned home from the war in 1945.

She and Don settled in Rockham, SD where they had a small farm on the north side of town. Don became a rural mail carrier in 1951 and retired in 1978. Together they raised six children: Steve (Marilyn) Joyce of Sioux City, IA; Brent (Jane) Joyce of Lincoln, NE; Randy (Barb) Joyce of Sioux Falls, SD; Vince Joyce of Sioux Falls, SD; Michelle (John) Schiley of Webster, SD; and Lisa (Paul) Cosato of Redfield, SD.

Argie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. During the years her children were young, she was a stay at home mom. She was known throughout the Rockham community for her wonderful pies and hospitality. Her family especially loved her butterscotch pie and thought it was the best in the world.

She was a friend to all and her home was a welcome place for family and friends. She loved to visit with people of all ages. Her fondness for playing cards continued throughout her life as she attended and hosted more card parties than can be counted, with family and neighbors.

She was an active volunteer in numerous civic groups, the Redfield City Council, as well as an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Zell before becoming a member of St. Bernard Church in Redfield after her move to Redfield. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and was a 50+ year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Rockham, SD.

After the family moved to Redfield in 1967, Argie worked as a CNA at James Valley Nursing Home, as a dental assistant for Dr. Birkholz, as a speech therapy aide at the Redfield State Hospital and School and a special needs tutor at Redfield Headstart. She and Don enjoyed attending the National Rural Letter Carrier Association National Conventions as well as reunions of Don's military regiment, Company B 1st Medical Regiment, until his death in 1983.

On January 15, 1995, Argie married Ken Buss and they made their home in Redfield. They enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, AZ and visiting friends and relatives until Ken's death in 2010.

She is survived by her six children; grandchildren, Kristi (Steve) Weiderhold of Sioux City, IA, Dr. Steven (Kathryn) Joyce of Sioux City, IA, Dr. Jeffrey (Yamel) Joyce of Las Cruces, NM, Michael (Leigh) Joyce of Omaha, NE, Tess (AJ) Ostdiek of Salem, MA, Mark (Meghann) Joyce of Sioux Falls, SD, Nick Schiley and David Schiley of Webster, SD, Rick Schiley of Murdo, SD, Vince (Alisa) Joyce of Overland Park, KS, Bobbi Jo Joyce of Sioux Falls, SD, Donnie (Jennifer) Joyce of Fargo, ND, Zoe, Trey, Angelo and Isabella Cosato of Redfield, SD; 16 great grandchildren; her brother, Milton Schmidt of Redfield; brother-in-law, Don Bottum of Tulare, SD and sister-in-law Margaret Joyce of Brookfield, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald James Joyce and Ken Buss; half-brother, Freddie Schmidt; her sisters, Elaine Hines-Lingscheit and Marlene Bottum.

The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the Eastern Star Home for the loving care they provided for Argie, Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home for their genuine compassion when arranging our mother's final journey home, and St. Bernard's Alter Society for providing a meal at the church.
