Barbara Joanne “Jeanie” Harrington, 80, formerly of Redfield, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026, at Clarkson Health Care Facility in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Barbara, known as Jeanie, was born on October 2, 1945, to Ethel and Frank Grogan in St. Lawrence, South Dakota. She graduated from high school in Miller, South Dakota.
Jeanie married Richard Harrington on December 23, 1963. They moved to Redfield, South Dakota, where they worked and raised their family. In 2025, Jeanie and Richard moved to Rapid City to be closer to family.
Jeanie loved cooking and baking with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, planting flowers, and gardening. She was always willing to help others, and her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Although Jeanie faced several health challenges over the years, she remained positive and kept repeating that she was a “tough ole’ bird.” She became an adopted grandmother to many staff members at Clarkson Health Care Facility.
Barbara shared her life with Richard for 62 years. She is survived by:
Her spouse, Richard; her children, Kirk Harrington (Karen) and Roxane Carney (Dan); her grandchildren, Amber (Kyle) Christman, Daniel Carney, Brandi Petersen (Gary Galindo), and Cassie Carney; her great-grandchildren, Abby and Jack Christman; her siblings, Roger (Donna) Grogan and Joyce Mayeaux
Jeanie was preceded in death by:
Her parents, Ethel and Frank Grogan; her siblings, Marilyn Krentz, Wayne Grogan, Donald Grogan, Lowell Grogan, Jerry Grogan, Lois Grogan, and William Grogan; her brothers-in-law, Dale Mayeaux and Bruce Krentz; her sister-in-law, Bernice Grogan
A celebration of Jeanie’s life will be held at a later date.
