Obituary

Cal Eugene Nowell, 86, of Tulare, SD passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, at Avantara Huron in Huron, SD.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with family present, on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield.

Cal's funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 22, at the Tulare United Church in Tulare.  Burial, with military honors, will take place at Graceland Cemetery in rural Tulare. Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate.

Cal Eugene Nowell was born on November 17, 1934, to Wilbert and Clara (Brugger) Nowell in Tulare. Cal graduated from Tulare High School in 1952.  He joined the South Dakota National Guard as a junior in high school and he served for 6 ½ years.  He attended Huron College for two years.  While attending college, he worked as a watch repairman in a jewelry store.

Cal married Jean Lovett on November 9, 1957, in Hitchcock, SD.  They lived on a farm near Hitchcock, where he farmed for more than 50 years and raised their four children.  He enjoyed watching and playing sports, especially fishing and hunting.  Cal bought cattle for many years for his son and grandsons.

Grateful for sharing his life are his children:  Kathryn (Lee) Schaunaman of Aberdeen, SD, Kenneth (Tamara) Nowell of Hitchcock, Ronald Nowell of Hitchcock, and Christine (Brian) Evans of Colton, SD; grandchildren:  Amanda (Andy) Dolan of Austin, TX, Staci (Sreedhar) Thota of Omaha, NE, Justin (Naomi) Hull of Aberdeen, Dominic (Andrew) Frisbie of Iowa City, IA  Spencer (Rosevin) Hull of Rapid City, SD, Joshua (Kasey) Nowell of Hitchcock, Jordan (Rachael) Nowell of Ellendale, ND, John (Koree) Nowell of Hitchcock, Jeremy (Emily) Nowell of Tulare, Caleb (Ashley) Evans of Sioux Falls, SD, Aaron Evans of Fort Wainwright (Fairbanks), AK, Kendra (Joe) Layne of Harrisburg, SD, Ethan Evans of Colton, Matthew Evans of Colton, Ian Evans of Colton; and step-grandchildren: Stephanie (Michael) Jahn, Audra Schaunaman, Jonah (Jaici) Schaunaman, and Elijah (Shelby) Schaunaman.  He is also survived by 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don; a nephew Jimmy Nowell and a fishing partner Bud Gross.
