Charles E. Hurst, 80, of Redfield, SD died Saturday, June 9, 2007 at his home in Redfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father William Osborn and Fr. Christopher Hughes will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery in Frankfort with full military rites.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Charles was born July 21, 1926 in Chula, Missouri to Oscar and Vergie (Lightner) Hurst. He moved with his family, as a young boy, to Bonilla, SD and attended Bonilla School. Charles served in the United States Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean War. After his discharge, he married Mary Robinson on January 20, 1953 in Frankfort. They made their home in Frankfort, Turton and Hitchcock while Charles worked on various farms. He worked for Bob Freeburg from 1963-1976. From 1976 until he retired in 1986, he worked for Teuber Oil/Appel Oil. He also worked for Swanson Farms.
He was a member of the Catholic Church, Knight's of Columbus and Paul A. Schleher VFW Post #2755.
Charles enjoyed reading western books, watching his children and grandchildren play softball, the Frankfort Coffee Club, wood working, fishing and hunting.
Charles is survived by his wife Mary of Redfield, two sons: Jim and Joe Hurst of Frankfort, three daughters: Kathi (David) Swanson of Frankfort, Kristina (Joe) Barrie of Turton, SD and Karol (Bob) Artz of Ashton, SD and eleven grandchildren: Natasha (Scott Feller) Swanson, Matthew Hurst, Amanda (Dominic) Evans, Teresa Barrie, Meghan Hurst, Andrew Swanson, Samantha Swanson, Klysta Barrie, Morghan Hurst, Anthony Swanson and Tyler Artz. He is also survived by four sisters: Marge Frank of Sioux Falls, SD, Helen (Clifford) Gascoigne of Wolsey, SD, Dorothy Brandenburg of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Rod) Mattinen of Sioux Falls, SD and one brother George (Judy) Hurst of Sioux Falls, SD and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers-in-law: Daelyn Mason, Don Frank, Don Brandenberg and Harry Bill Betten.
