Charlotte Wernsmann, 92, of Casper, WY and formerly of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper.
Charlotte was cremated and her memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February, 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Joji Itukulapati will celebrate the mass.
Cremains Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Redfield. There will be a rosary Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
Charlotte Helen was born in Redfield on July 18, 1921 to D.D. Benning and Rena (Sisson) Benning. Charlotte attended school in Redfield and graduated in 1939. Following High School, she taught in a rural school near Redfield. She was also a practical nurse during World War II in Faulkton. While working in Faulkton she met the love of her life, Edward Wernsmann, on a blind date. They were married on January 10, 1946. During their 50 years of marriage Charlotte and Ed raised 6 children.
Charlotte was active in the Catholic Church, a longtime member of the Chit Chat extension club and Daughters of the American Legion. Charlotte ran a daycare out of her home for over 20 years and she was known to her daycare children as "Grandma Charlotte". Charlotte remained in touch with many of these families. During retirement Ed and Charlotte lived in a small retirement community in Redfield. Following Edward's death, Charlotte moved to Wyoming to be closer to her two oldest daughters.
She is survived by her 6 children: Richard (Merry) Wernsmann of Wiggins, CO; Linda Uttenhove of Douglas, WY; Michaelene Wilson of Casper, WY; Cheryl (Donald) Arthurs of Redfield, SD; James (June) Wernsmann of Sioux Falls, SD; Steven (Chevelle) Wernsmann of Brush, CO. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Two brothers: Verland (Lucille) Benning of Long Barn, CA and Kenneth Benning of Tucson, AZ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, Robert Uttenhove and three brothers: Clayton Benning, Lowell "Tiny" Benning and Albert Benning.
