Cleone Verna (Walton) Rice, 86, of Rockham, SD, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2020, at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, SD.
Services will take place on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD. Visitation will take place from 1:00-2:00, with family present, and her funeral service will start at 2:00 p.m. The funeral will be live-streamed to the funeral home website. Please follow current Covid-19 guidelines, including social distancing, and masks are encouraged at the funeral home.
Pastor Adrian Timmons will officiate. Interment will follow the funeral at the Rockham Grace Cemetery in Rockham, SD. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Cleone Verna Walton was born November 1, 1933, to William Albert Walton and Marilla (O'Hara) Walton at Bonilla, SD. The family later moved to the Wessington, SD area where she attended school. During her junior year of school her parents were killed in a car/train accident. Cleone then went to live with relatives in Tulare, SD, where she and her twin brother, Leon, finished their senior year. Upon graduating, she moved north of Rockham to live with her older sister Aletha (Walton) Kissner. During this time, she met a handsome neighbor, David Rice. They were married on June 14, 1952, in Faulkton, SD. They farmed in the Rockham area and raised four children: Clinton, Gayle, Neil, and Nancy. She enjoyed a busy life raising kids, and also enjoyed helping outdoors with sheep, cattle, raising poultry and all aspects of the farm life.
Cleone will be missed by her children: Clinton (Carol) Rice and Nancy (Michael) Bruce; and grandchildren: Travis (Angela) Rice, Lucas (Tommi Jo) Rice, Sarah Rice, Halie (Dalton) Martchinske, Briana (Austin) Wager, Aaron (Rebecca) Bruce, Lindsay (Keith) Jaton, Abram (Bridget) Bruce, Leah (Josh) Golter, Tammy (Jeff) Luce, Kellie (Ryan) Sattler, Brent Fountain, and Tony (Katie) Fountain. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Olivia, Addyson, Levi, Lane, Mesa, Matti, Mecarty, Clayton, Braxton, Lawsyn, Landry, Jamison, Lex, Avalee, Emilie, Zachary, Macie, Tatum, Dalton, Emersen, Ainslee, Kaidence, Beckett, Miley, Bentley, Sophie, and Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband David in 2005; son Neil in 2006; daughter Gayle in 2011; and her siblings: Melvin Walton, Lyle Walton, Marvin Walton, Leon Walton, Aletha (Walton) Kissner, and Roberta (Walton) Marshal.
