Clifford E. Nowell, 82, of Redfield, SD, formerly of Tulare, SD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield with military honors to follow. Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate. Following the services, Clifford will be cremated and burial will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2018 with the family present one hour prior to the funeral service to accept condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Clifford Eugene Nowell was born on July 3, 1935 in Huron, SD to Edward and Letha (McDowell) Nowell. He attended grade school in Brookings, SD until his move to the family farm east of Tulare. Clifford attended country school near Tulare and attended Tulare High School.
Clifford enlisted in the United States Marines in 1953 and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He was honorably discharged in 1956. On June 9, 1959, he married Kathryn Edgar in Redfield.
Clifford was employed by Rude Transportation, Dakota Sheet Metal, and the SD State Hospital and School where he worked in the Powerhouse. Clifford farmed most of his life until retiring. He was a self-taught mechanic and welder and enjoyed tinkering with things. Over the years, he also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities, relaxing with his favorite dachshund, and having dinners with family.
Clifford is survived by his wife, Kathy; their children: David (Kelley) Nowell of Detroit Lakes, MN; Jeff (Malinda) Nowell of Tulare, SD, and Cindy (Keith) Arneson of Huron, SD; his grandchildren: Amber (Jon) Rastedt, Lacey (Dan) McCormack, Jeannie (Kyle) Kafka, Jesse Nowell, Alecia Arneson and her fiancé Matt Meyer, Jessica (Eli) Little and Julia Nowell; and his great-grandchildren: Reed and Reagan; Kendra and Wyatt; Brylee and Barron; Emry and Eloise; Romeo and Rachel; and Sophie and Lucy.
He is also survived by his brother, Roger Nowell of Rapid City, SD and cousins Cal Nowell of Huron, SD and Helen Sue Mitchell of Wills Point, TX.
Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; sister Janice Dial; brother Glen Nowell; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorials be made to the Kennedy Tomsha Memorial Scholarship at Hitchcock-Tulare High School or the Home on the Range Foundation.
