Colleen
Hardie
January 10, 1936 – January 19, 2022
Colleen Hardie, 86, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, in Redfield, SD.
Colleen often said, even on her last day, "I have had a wonderful life." She will rest at the Rockham Cemetery and her family will host her Celebration of Life at 12 noon on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Leo's Good Food in Redfield. All are welcome.
She was born (Shirley Colleen Michels) to Pearl (Yada) and Joe Michels on January 10, 1936, on the family farm NW of Rockham. She was the third of four children and enjoyed many gatherings of family and friends. She was active in the Methodist Church, played trombone in the band, played softball and attended 4-H meetings, going to the State Fair in Huron with projects. There were always dances to attend in Rockham, Zell, Miranda, and later, Redfield.
After graduating from Redfield High School in 1953, Colleen attended Northern State College for one year and then taught at country schools near Miranda and Rockham.
In 1955, Colleen married Jim Jungwirth who was in the U.S.A.F. and their first location was Fort Worth, TX. Then, after two years in Chicago, IL they moved to Phoenix, AZ and then to California, Oklahoma, Texas, and back to California. They had five children: Laurie and Joe (both born in Chicago), Jeff (born in Phoenix), Gregory (born in Phoenix and lived one day) and Angie (born in Oklahoma City).
In 1974, Colleen and Jim divorced, and she with her four children and family dog, Chubsy, returned to Redfield to enjoy life with relatives and new friends. In 1980, Colleen married Keith Hardie, who was widowed and had two sons, Bob and Greg. Colleen worked at the James Valley Nursing Home in the office, as a hostess at the Supper Club and then at the Post Office for 20 years.
Colleen and Keith traveled to Las Vegas several times and to many states, visiting their kids and families. Their vacations included attending high school and college sporting events and graduations of the grandchildren. One memorable trip was to Washington D.C. with her sister Joyce and Joyce's husband, Red Wittenhagen. A special overseas trip included Colleen, Joyce and her two girlfriends traveling to England, Amsterdam, Germany and cruising the Rhine River.
Colleen and Keith both enjoyed playing cards (pinochle, whist, bridge, pitch) and hosted many gatherings of friends and family through the years. Colleen also enjoyed organizing and playing pinochle at Leo's Good Food with her many friends.
Her one great sorrow was the loss of her son Jeff's lovely wife, Julie (Dangel), who died of breast cancer and was survived by their two young children, Chris and Amanda.
Colleen has seven grandchildren: Travis and Tyler Duncan (Laurie, married to Steve Duncan); Justin and Briana Jungwirth (Joe, married to Karen Lawrence); Chris and Amanda Jungwirth (Jeff Jungwirth); and Alana Lambert (Angie Lambert). She has one great-grandson, Freddie Tomlinson (Briana Jungwirth) and two stepsons, Bob (married to Colleen Donohue) and Greg Hardie and his two children, Jacob and JoAnna Hardie.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Joe Michels, son Gregory Jungwirth, daughter-in-law Julie (Dangel) Jungwirth and her brother, Roger Michels.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully prefers memorial donations to the Family Crisis Center (PO Box 347, Redfield, SD, 57469) and Tri-County Good Samaritan Center Food Pantry (19 E 7th Ave., Redfield, SD, 57469).
