Connie was born January 22nd, 1942, to Wesley and Ella (Schmidt) Petersmeyer in Redfield. She had two older sisters and attended grade school and high school in Redfield. Connie graduated from Redfield High School in 1960. She was united in marriage to Gary Newman on August 20th, 1961, in Redfield. They had two daughters, Debbie and Tammy.
After graduation, Connie began working at the First National Bank in Redfield, where she worked until 1969, when she took a part-time job at the Spink County Sheriff’s office as a bookkeeper, radio dispatcher, and a cook for prisoners serving three meals a day. She worked for Spink County until August 1986. During this time, she also worked part-time with the Department of Motor Vehicles, assisting with driver’s license testing.
In September of 1986, she began working at Stacey Drug, moving to store manager of the JCPenney Catalog Store in July 1989. She continued in that role until the catalog store closed and then worked very part-time at Mike’s Furniture Store. She enjoyed her many and various jobs.
Connie was active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ throughout her life, especially in the women’s fellowship group.
Connie was also active in the South Dakota Peace Officer’s auxiliary for many years, holding a state office for several years. Connie was an avid bowler in her younger years and enjoyed playing many different types of cards throughout her life. Connie also loved to help plan and participate in many class reunions for her and Gary’s classes over the years.
She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their Cottonwood Lake cabin. If you stopped, you didn’t leave hungry, as she always had plenty of food to serve to anyone who stopped by.
In 2023, Connie and Gary moved to the Eastern Star Apartments, where she resided until her death.
Connie is survived by two daughters, Debbie Perman of Mitchell, SD, and Tammy (Guy) Childs of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren: Brandon (Stephanie) Perman of Sioux Falls, SD, Cody Perman of Sioux Falls, SD, Kayla (Matthew) Glombicki of Mount Prospect, IL, Cory (Aubrey) Childs, of Monument, CO, and Morgan Childs of Denver, CO. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Asher, Avery, Owen and William – with two more expected in the coming months.
She was preceded in death by Gary, her husband of 64 years, parents, grandparents, two sisters, Gladys Precht and Virginia Blocker, and many relatives and friends.
