Dale Cecil Markegard was born December 30, 1927 near Brandt, SD to Clarence and Lois (Asher) Markegard. He attended several rural schools, worked as a farm hand before being employed at the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, SD. He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. Dale married Phyllis Hansen in Orient, SD on December 11, 1951. He spent several years working on road construction, was employed at Orient Farmer's Union, managed Jay's Station in Redfield. He operated his own Salvage operation until illness forced his retirement.
Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, attending auctions, playing the slots and spending time with his family.
He was a member of Roland Eggar American Legion Post in Orient, Clay Kiser American Legion Post #92 in Redfield, Orient Lutheran Church where he served on the church board and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Dale is survived by his wife Phyllis of Redfield, two sons: Roger (Edith Christman) Markegard of Redfield and Bruce Markegard of Watertown, two daughters: Donna (Dennis Brinson) Brownell of Trent, SD and Janice (Howard) Rounds of Iroquois. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three brothers: Iner of Phelan, CA; Dwaine of Argo, ID; and Lyle "Bud" of Fairbault, MN; three sisters: Vera Redlin of Eudora, KS; Mavis Frauline of Vancouver, WA; and Joyce (Edward) Vysocky of San Bernardino, CA; sisters-in-law: Marlys Markegard of Vancouver, WA; Mimi Markegard of Phelan, CA; Shirley Markegard of Canby, MN; and JoAnn Behn of Blackfoot, ID; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Lyle, Warren and Harlan, brother-in-law Eugene Redlin and nephews: Steve Vysocky and Rob Markegard.
