Daniel Dickhaut, 95, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral will be Friday, June 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Redfield. Reverend Joe Story will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Daniel was born November 17, 1916 in Irvin, Alberta, Canada to Jacob and Marie (Litke) Dickhaut. As a small child, his family moved to Golden Valley, ND. He grew up on a farm and when he was seventeen, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. He served in Camp Orville near Custer, SD for three years. On May 14, 1939 Daniel married Verona Buchmann at Beulah, ND. They moved to South Dakota in 1946 and to Redfield in 1962. Daniel worked at South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield until his retirement in 1982.
Dan enjoyed working on antique furniture and bringing it back to life. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
Daniel is survived by his six children: Duane (Betty) Dickhaut of Rapid City, SD; Dennis (Janice) Dickhaut of Rockham, SD; Mavis (Jerry) Walton of Blunt, SD; Darlene (Willis) Rothacker of Redfield; Darrell (Barb) Dickhaut of Redfield and Darvin (Deb) Dickhaut of Redfield. He is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, one brother Clarence (Harriet) Dickhaut of Bismarck, ND; three sisters: Gertrude Saylor of Bismarck, ND; Elsie (Bill) Bender of Bismarck, ND and Durnetta (Gordon) Werth of Lehr, ND.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verona, in 1984, two daughters: Marlyss Jung and Carol Carr, one son Darrold in infancy and one great granddaughter Aria Lynn in infancy.
