Darlene was born November 23, 1930, in their rural home near Ashton, SD, to parents Jacob "Jake" and Sophia (Oltman) Alberts. She spent her childhood on a family farm by Tulare, SD, where she attended grade school at the Crandon School. In 1948, Darlene graduated from Redfield High School.
On September 10, 1950, she married Michael "Mike" J. Schwab at the First Methodist Church in Huron, SD. Darlene called Redfield her home all her life.
Darlene was a devoted wife and mother. That role expanded after Mike's unexpected death in 1964, and she became a single parent of four children. She spent several years at J.C. Penney in Redfield as the store's bookkeeper. After retiring, she was an employee of the South Dakota Development Center as a switchboard operator. Here she formed many lifelong friends affectionately called the "Janklow Girls" after their jobs were eliminated. Through these years rearing her children, it was the support of family, friends, and the community that helped her raise the family.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Lioness Club, the Red Hats, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mike in 1964, son-in-law Mike Iaizzo, several uncles and aunts, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, and lifelong friend Maxine Marshall.
She is survived by her children: Randall (Sally) Schwab of Redfield, Douglas (Donna) Schwab of Eden Prairie, MN, Sandra (Jim) Hildebrand of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Cynthia Iaizzo of Grand Rapids, MN; 7 grandchildren: Michelle (Chris Teiken) McCullough of Eagan, MN, Brandy Schwab of Lemmon, SD, Michael (Jessica) Schwab of Mesquite, TX, James (Angie) Schwab of Black Hawk, SD, Christopher (Amy) Schwab of Waconia, MN, Katherine (Rob) de Bruijn of Washington, MI, and Samantha Iaizzo of Grand Rapids, MN; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandson; and several bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Eastern Star Staff and residents for their love and care of their mom.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Eastern Star Home of SD in Redfield, PO Box 150, Redfield, SD 57469.
