Daryl Robert Ames, 71, of Tulare, SD, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

His services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. His memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM. Reverend Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate. Military honors will follow the service outside the chapel at the funeral home. Private inurnment will take place on the family farm.

Daryl was born on Halloween, October 31, 1954, in Deadwood, SD, to Robert and Erma Lou (Tubandt) Ames. He attended school in Tulare and graduated in 1972. Daryl enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in January of 1973.

On March 16, 1974, Daryl married Paula Brooker in Tulare. They lived in Michigan and Alaska until Daryl’s discharge in 1977.

They returned to the family farm to ranch cattle for most of 50 years.

Daryl enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Clay Kiser American Legion Post #92.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Paula of Tulare; sons, Jacob (Michelle) Ames of Rapid City, SD, and Daniel Ames of Tulare; three grandchildren, Haley Falcon, Remingtyn Ames, and Jacob Daryl Robert Ames; sisters: Kim Wright, Kathy Johnson, Tammy Morgan, and Lindy Gatewood; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Leroy and Elsie Brooker; brother-in-law David Oulman, and nephew Derek Kieper.
