Obituary

Dr. David M. Patterson, 84, of Redfield, SD, passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Easter Star Home in Redfield. His funeral will be Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Reverend Stephen Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Monday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 4-6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

David Morrison Patterson was born January 19, 1925 to David Alfred and Georgina (McKinstry) Patterson in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. David received Holy Baptism on July 1, 1928 and First Communion on April 6, 1941. David grew up in Winnipeg. In his youth, he played the violin, was an avid hockey player, and spent many summers with his parents and sister, Ida, at their family cabin in Winnetoba. He graduated from St. John's Technical High School and served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Following the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve and retired as a captain.



David attended the University of Manitoba School of Medicine. He married Joan Elizabeth Downes in Winnipeg on February 22, 1950. After obtaining his Medical Doctor degree in 1952, Dave and Joan moved to Saskatchewan where he practiced for 2 years. During this time they had 3 sons. They then moved to Redfield, SD in 1954 and had a son and 2 daughters. David served the community as a family physician where he and his associate Dr. Alvin Scheffel helped to establish a modern city hospital. David enjoyed a thriving medical practice at the Redfield Clinic and Community Memorial Hospital for over three decades.


On January 17, 1981, David married Norma Hyde Lindberg at Watertown, SD. David and Norma enjoyed working together in the medical profession until the late 1990's, when they retired and began wintering at Casa Grande, Arizona. In 2002, David moved to the Eastern Star Home at Redfield after a suffering a severe stroke.

On July 4, 2006, Dr. Patterson was honored with an award for over 50 years of service to the medical profession. David was a Charter Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the South Dakota Medical Association, and a long time member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

David was a gregarious man with a genuine love of people and a keen curiosity about the world around him. He was an avid reader and never without a book nearby. He loved the outdoors and hunted and fished at Winnetoba and in his adopted state of South Dakota. He had many varied interests including a passion for flying small aircraft and love of photography. David could strike up a conversation and find a common interest to talk about with anyone. He enjoyed the company of a large extended family and many lifelong friends. His compassion for others is legendary and his encouragement of people to better themselves will always be remembered.




David is survived by his wife Norma, Redfield; his children: Dr. David (Valerie) Patterson, Rochester, MN; John Norman (Nancy) Patterson, Milbank; Dr. Robert (Janice) Patterson, Aberdeen; Paul Patterson Newcastle, WY; and Susan (Phil) Daubman, Omaha, NE; 16 grandchildren: John Schneider, Christopher (Jillian) Patterson, Angie (James) Schwan, Tom, Mary and Emily Patterson, Lauren and Cole Patterson, Michael (Leslie), Ian, and Elizabeth Patterson, Erika and Drew Daubman, Ryan (Lacey) Hoffman, Alyssa (Jared) Sallee, and Bryce (Amy) Hoffman. Also surviving David: his sister Ida Patterson, Winnipeg; son-in-law Myron (Karmel) Hoffman, Newcastle; sister-in-law Sheila Macdonald and family, Winnipeg; his stepchildren: John Lindberg, Yankton; Mary (Greg) Martin, Phoenix, AZ; James (Christy) Lindberg, Sioux Falls; and Jennifer (Nancy) Lindberg, Pierre; six step grandchildren: Melissa (Travis) Lorenzen, Sydney and Patrick Martin, Kayla, Ryan and Sam Lindberg. Also surviving David are seven great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. In addition, David is survived by his stepmother-in-law Hilda Hyde, sisters-in-law Maxine Madewell, Jean McCain, Sandra Nielsen, Connie Stutchman and Kathy Hyde, brothers-in-law Ron, Sidney, Everett and Kent Hyde and their families.


In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his children's mother, Joan, in 1987 and their daughter Catherine M. Hoffman, in 1995. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law Sidney Hyde, sister-in-law Phyllis Salabert and brothers-in-law Tom, Larry and Roger Hyde and John Macdonald.
