Deanna Margaret (Johnson) Bindenagel, 75, of Frankfort, SD, passed away on Monday, April 27th, 2026, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, after a short battle with cancer that she fought with her family at her side. Deanna’s final act of kindness was the gift of sight through cornea donation.
Her services will be held on Friday, May 1st, in Frankfort. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Frankfort United Methodist Church with Pastor Kim Hastings officiating. Her funeral service will start at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery after the service. Lunch and fellowship will follow the burial at the Frankfort Community Center.

Deanna was born July 4th, 1950, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, SD, to Glen and Edna (Baird) Johnson. She spent her childhood and youth at the family farm near Frankfort. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1968. She continued her education at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD, and later at Northern State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Education.
She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Arden Bindenagel, on August 22nd, 1970, in Frankfort. To that union, two children were born, Anne and Kurt.
Deanna loved life and partaking in many activities. She loved to read, host and attend celebrations with her family, and fellowship with her Bible Study Group. Another favorite of Deanna’s was attending her granddaughters horse activities and basketball games with family members. She enjoyed the South Dakota State Fair each fall and spending time at Cottonwood Lake with family and friends.
She was also very active in the community. Teaming with her husband, they were Dekalb Seed Dealers for 37 years. She was also a Frankfort Ringnecks 4-H Club leader, COC committee member in Spink County, teacher at the Redfield Public School, and was the first girls’ basketball coach in Redfield. Her love of teaching led her to be a Sunday School Teacher and organist at her local church in Frankfort. Bringing her love of learning and love of music to her many students over the years.
Deanna is survived by her husband of 55 years Arden of Frankfort; children: Anne (Bjorn) Aamot of De Smet, SD, and Kurt (Heather Morris) Bindenagel of Frankfort; sisters: Glenna Herker of Muncie, IN and Kathleen Nagel of Sioux Falls; and brother Alan (Mickie) Johnson of Frankfort. She is also survived by two granddaughters: Callie and Candice; sister-in-law Sharon Kounas; and numerous nieces and nephews who were shining stars in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carol (Johnson) Hassebroek, and brothers-in-law: Larry Herker, Leonard Nagel, Glenn Hassebroek, Nick Kounas, and Ronald (Barbara) Bindenagel.
Memorials may be donated to Mt. Hope Cemetery (c/o Alan Johnson / 17457 396th Avenue / Frankfort, SD / 57440) and the American Cancer Society (PO Box 1146 / Sioux Falls, SD / 57101).
