Obituary

Dennis Keith Roeber, 74, of Lutz, FL, passed away at home on Friday, October 1, 2021. Visitation, with family present, will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 10, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD.  A prayer service and time of sharing will start at 7:00 p.m.

His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 11, at Tulare United Church in Tulare, SD.  Interment, with military honors, will follow the service at St. John's Cemetery in rural Tulare.  Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate.

Dennis was born August 10, 1947, in Redfield, SD, to Melvin and Leona (Pottratz) Roeber. He attended Buffalo Township country school through the fourth grade and graduated from Tulare High School in 1965.  In 1969, he graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD.  While in college he enlisted in the United States Navy. His naval career began with his assignment to the USS Kretschmar based out of Key West, FL.

In 1977, while in Boston for a ship overhaul, Dennis met his life partner, Kathleen Sheehan.  Dennis and Kathy were married in San Diego, CA, on November 10, 1979.  They spent the next 15 years stationed in San Diego, CA, Charleston, SC, Virginia Beach, VA, Okinawa, Japan and Stafford, VA.  From 1988 to 1992, Dennis was an instructor at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA where he taught naval tactics to Marines. USNCDR Roeber retired from the Navy in 1992 after 24 years of service.  He was a true patriot and believed that it had been a privilege to serve his country.

After his retirement from the Navy, Dennis spent 14 years as the plant manager for Black Hills Power in Osage, WY. From there he relocated to Southaven, MS and was a new resident of Florida at the time of his death.

Dennis loved watching his two grandsons play baseball, traveling to visit family, golf and walking.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Kathleen, of Lutz, FL; his son, Dana (Caroline) and their children, Ireland, Leyton and Gavin of Wesley Chapel, FL and his granddaughter, Chelsea Roeber Thomson (Nathan) and their children Vivienne, Levi and Magnolia of Provo, UT.  He is also survived by his brother, Richard Roeber of Tulare, SD and his sisters, Bonnie (David) Bourassa of Stratford, SD, and Carol (Fran) Esser of Redfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, David and his brother, John.
