Donald "Don" Gene Hardie, 87, of Redfield, SD, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield. Reverend Tammy Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be prior to the service on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. Family will be present during this time to accept condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Donald Gene Hardie was born in Redfield, SD on June 23, 1931, to George and Lucille (Mommer) Hardie. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1949. He attended SDSU in Brookings, SD. Don farmed and ranched in the Redfield-Zell area from 1949 to the present. He married Phyllis Yada on April 25, 1992.
Don enjoyed hunting with family and friends. One of Don's favorite pastimes was watching the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. His passion for baseball was evident to the local community as he coached for 38 years. He coached the VFW Teeners, American Legion, and a local town team. The baseball community of the state of South Dakota honored him in 1998 by inducting him into the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame. Don spent many hours at Appel's and Chrystal's playing cards and enjoying his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Lucille Hardie and sister Dorothy (Hardie) Mann.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hardie of Redfield; three sons: Randy (Kathy) Hardie of Canton, SD; Rodney (Karen) Hardie of Fargo, ND; and Derrion (Lisa) Hardie of Madison, SD; nine grandchildren: Nicole (Jeromy) Pankratz, Travis (Kristen) Hardie, Alicia (Pete) Siegling, Ilissa Hardie, Evan Hardie, Elizabeth Hardie, Sierra Hardie, Zach Hardie, and Madisyn Hardie as well as eight great-grandchildren. Don is also survived by his step-children: Bryan (Velma) Yada; Lee (Tess) Yada; Paul (Jean) Yada; and Lauren (Kim) Yada; six step-grandchildren: Wade (Megan) Yada, Casey (Kelsey) Yada, Ashley (Cris) Johnson, Jessica Yada, Mercedes Yada, and Shelby (Zeb) Tolle; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
