October 2, 1924 – January 25, 2017
Dorothy Mae Carter, 92, of Redfield, SD, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redfield. Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield. Reverend Tammy Toepke-Floyd will officiate. Private burial will take place at a later date.
Dorothy Mae (Sievers) Carter was born October 2, 1924 in Redfield to Leonard and Harriet "Norma" Sievers. She attended grade school in Miranda, SD at the Sievers Country School and graduated from Faulkton High School. Dorothy married Edmund Carter on July 10, 1943 in Brookings, SD.
Dorothy worked at various places including Ken's, Siegling's, Miller Drugstore, and Terry's Bar. She was the secretary at Fisher Grove County Club and also ran a day care. After retirement, Dorothy and Ed enjoyed traveling including trips to both the east and west coasts.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and past president of the American Legion. She was also a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and was active with the church rummage sale for many years. When she was younger, Dorothy enjoyed bowling, golf and cross stitch.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Roger (Nancy) Carter of Frankfort, SD and their children Corey Carter, JoAnn Fliehs and Jamie Carter; Douglas (Verleen) Carter of Redfield and their children Tamara Burt, Melanie Adcock, Shawna Hillsdale, Amanda Boomsma and Kyle Carter; Cherylnn "Sherry" Aucoin of Redfield and her children Stephanie Hansen and Jennifer Aucoin; and Janet (Dennis) Von Eschen of Aberdeen, SD and their children Darcy Snyder and Darren Von Eschen. She is also survived by 25 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and two special aunts: Adala Thorn and Coralea Richmond.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund; her sister Betty Benning and her granddaughter, Jocelyn.
Dorothy's family requests that memorials be directed to the Placerville Camp or charity of choice.
Private burial will take place at a later date.
