Dorothy Thelma (Schmidt) Wilcox, 94, of Redfield, SD, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redfield, SD. Her funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. MDT on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD with Chaplain Micah Covington officiating.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Hyke Funeral Home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home. (www.hykefuneralhome.com).
Dorothy Thelma Schmidt was born on February 1, 1924 in Pierre, SD to Fred and Minnie (Hinders) Schmidt. She attended country school until the 8th grade and went on to graduate from Pierre High School in 1941. Following graduation Dorothy worked at Western Union Telegraph until 1943. She then took on an exciting job in the Air Force Signal Corp. She worked for the Signal Corp at Pierre Air Base and Abilene, Texas.
Dorothy married John A. "Blackie" Wilcox, the love of her life, on October 27, 1943 in Pierre, SD and from this union three children were born. The family later moved to Redfield, SD where she worked for KFCB and KQKD radio stations for 25 years.
Dorothy was a member of the Methodist church in Pierre, SD. She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary, Womens Business and Professional Womens Club. Dorothy enjoyed fishing with her husband and their friends Newt and Ernie Tuber. She was an avid reader and enjoyed painting pictures, cards, and place mats for her family.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, John Wilcox of Redfield and Dave (Glenda) Wilcox of Sturgis; six granddaughters: Kea (Chad Lee) Wager, Shawn (Jami) Groft, Kalena (Travis) Fast, TJ (Josh) Wilcox-Olson, Samantha (Jason) Fejfar, Lynette (Stacy) Rhoden; one grandson, Bobby Wilcox; 14 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Blackie" Wilcox in 1988, one infant son, five half-brothers and two half-sisters.
