Dorothy Zens, 74, of Redfield, SD, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father William Osborn will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Zell, SD. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8:00 p.m. at St. Bernard's Church with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Dorothy Jean Wernsmann was born on October 4, 1932 to Phillip and Mary (Maloney) Wernsmann, in Washabaugh County, near Headlee Ranch on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The family returned to the Polo area in 1942. She graduated from Fairview High School in Polo in 1951. After graduation Dorothy resided in Redfield and worked as a nurse's aide. On June 18, 1957, she married Edmund Frank Zens in Polo. Dorothy and Edmund farmed in the Cresbard area, where they had four children, Phil, Bill, Ray, and Paula. Edmunds work as an electrician took the family through out the United States. In 1990 Dorothy and Edmund returned to the Redfield area, and Dorothy returned to her work in the healthcare field. She retired in 1998.
Dorothy enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic sport fan.
She is survived by her sons Phillip (Jackie) of Nevada, Bill (Rosie) of Texas, Raymond (Robin) in North Dakota; a daughter, Paula (Cory) Harris of Oregon; fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Phil, who lives in the Kimball area and two sisters: Kathryn (Maurice) Schlechter of Polo and Betty Schlechter of Miller.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
