September 11, 1934 – January 1, 2017
Duaine J. Zens, 82, of Redfield, SD, formerly of Zell, SD, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. Reverend Gregory Frankman will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Zell.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a Scriptural Rosary beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. Family will be present during this time to accept condolences. Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com)
Duaine J. Zens was born in Redfield on September 11, 1934 to Albert and Mary Ann (Staufer) Zens. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at St. Mary's in Zell through the eighth grade. After graduation, he worked on the farm until he entered the Army.
After his service in the Army, Duaine did construction work for a few years before returning to the farm where he remained until entering the Eastern Star Home three years ago.
Duaine loved hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards and watching westerns. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Athol Vet's Club, St. Mary's Church in Zell and St. Bernard's Church in Redfield.
Duaine is survived by his best friend, Poochie; four brothers and four sisters: Dean (Diann) Zens of Zell; Kaylene (Chuck) Moffenbier of Aberdeen, SD; Jerry Zens of Zell; Audrey (Bob) Bsharah of Rapid City, SD; Rita (Dan) Hardes of Sioux Falls, SD; Donna (Richard) Neary of Grand Rapids, MN; Leo (Bea) Zens of Scottsdale, AZ; and Daniel (Debra) Zens of St. Paul, MN. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; special friends: Gene and Tootie Maher; Bob and Linda Cleberg and the caretakers from the Eastern Star Home.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
