Edmund L. Carter, 86, of Redfield, SD, died Tuesday, May 04, 2010 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. His funeral will be Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at First Congregational-UCC Church in Redfield. Reverend Tim Fugman will officiate. Military rites will be performed after the services with burial at a later date. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Ed was born August 4, 1923 near Rockham, SD to Ralph and Marjorie (Lloyd) Carter. He graduated from Rockham High School in 1941 and married Dorothy Sievers on July 10, 1943 in Brookings. Ed served in the United States Air Force during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. After his discharge, he worked at Dakota Hatchery and various jobs before he started working for the Department of Transportation. Ed worked as a Engineering Technician for twenty-nine years, retiring in 1985.
Ed and Dorothy traveled throughout the United States. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, camping, golfing and bowling.
Ed was an outstanding baseball player. He was inducted into the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. He played baseball with Rockham and Redfield from 1935-56. In 1950, He was picked up by Watertown and that team won the National Championship. He also was inducted into the Umpires Hall of Fame.
Ed is survived by his wife Dorothy of Redfield; two sons: Roger (Nancy) Carter of Frankfort, SD and their children Corey Carter, JoAnn Fliehs and Jamie Carter; Douglas (Verleen) Carter of Redfield and their children Tamara Burt, Melanie Adcock, Shawna Carter, Amanda Boomsma and Kyle Carter; Cherlynn "Sherry" Aucoin of Redfield and her children Stephanie Hansen and Jennifer Aucoin; and Janet (Dennis) Von Eschen of Aberdeen, SD and their children Darcy Snyder and Darren Von Eschen. He is also survived by eighteen great grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: James and Daryl, his sisters: Georgia Gossard, Velma Houghtaling and Karen Carter, his son-in-law Kelly Aucoin and his great granddaughter Jocelyn.
