Eileen Anna Johnson was born on a farm near Redfield, SD on March 13, 1926 to Franz and Vendla (Nelson) Johnson who both emigrated from Sweden. Along with her sister Alice and brother Albin, she never knew her mother, who died shortly after Albin was born. Her father faced the reality of raising three small children alone on the farm. He eventually remarried and Una Poore became their stepmother.
Eileen graduated from grade school in a one-room school and then graduated from Redfield High School in 1944. She attended Mitchell Business College and then worked for the South Dakota Farmer's Union and architect Walter J. Dixon who also owned the Lawler Hotel. In 1950, she married Wallace Muellenberg and they lived on a farm northwest of Redfield where they raised their three sons: Michael, Daryl and Gary. In 2009, Wally and Eileen moved into Redfield. Wally passed away in 2012, after 62 years of marriage.
Eileen was an active member of the United Church of Christ and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. She was also a member of Sarah-Helene Circle and Women's Fellowship and served in various offices. She also was a long time member of the Redfield Hospital Auxiliary. She liked to do counted cross-stitch embroidery, dance, read and watch the Twins and Vikings.
Eileen is survived by her sons: Michael of Aberdeen, SD; Daryl of St. Paul, MN and his son: Tony (Sarah) and their children, Ace and Avery; and Gary (Mary) of Minneapolis, MN and their sons: Ross and Tom (Rochelle) and their son Judd.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wally; her grandson, Troy, and her siblings, Alice and Albin.
Eileen will be remembered for her devotion to her family, friends, church and community.
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eileen's memory.
