(Rath) Durfee
September 20, 1925 – October 29, 2019
Eleanore R. Durfee, 94, of Redfield, SD, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Reverend Marty Toepke-Floyd will officiate. A private family burial will be at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be prior to the service, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., at the church. Family will be present during this time to accept condolences. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
Eleanore R. Rath was born September 20, 1925, in Ree Heights, SD, to Gottfried and Kathriana (Schaeffer) Rath. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Hand County. On December 29, 1945, Eleanore married Alvin Durfee in Huron, SD. After residing in both Highmore and Phillip, SD, they moved to Redfield, SD in 1960. Eleanore's husband Al passed away in 1982.
In addition to being a homemaker, Eleanore worked at Sooper-Dooper Market, JC Penney, Ken's Super Valu, and Al's Meat Plant before becoming a Food Service Supervisor at the South Dakota Development Center in Redfield, SD. After retirement, she worked at the Beverly Healthcare Nursing Home and was very proud to be a Foster Grandparent.
Eleanore loved attending her children and grandchildren's activities and enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, and video lottery. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary; and member and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Eleanore is survived by her son David (Sandra) Durfee of Redfield; three grandchildren: Chad (Theresa) Durfee of Dell Rapids, SD; Kristy (Blair) Kruse of Brookings, SD; and Jessica McGuire of Sioux Falls; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al; parents; daughter Cindy McGuire; grandson Darin Durfee; five sisters; and one brother.
