Elizabeth "Betty" Steele, 89, of Redfield, SD, died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. Her funeral will be Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Redfield. Pastor Lorah Houser-Jankord will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockham Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 4-6:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. Memorials will be directed to the Rockham Cemetery. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Elizabeth "Betty" Leno was born July 7, 1921 in Tuttle, ND to Daniel and Emelia (Bechtold) Leno. She was one of eleven children and was raised on a farm southwest of Tuttle. Betty married Kenneth Steele on September 29, 1940. They farmed near Rockham until 1960 when they moved to Redfield. Betty worked at the South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield and Community Memorial Hospital.
Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her seven years at PBC 3rd Street apartments. She enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, playing cards and especially spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her children: Jim (Linda) Steele of Ft. Pierre, SD; Dan (Shirley) Steele of Fort Collins, CO; and Linda (David) Broderick of Scottsbluff, NE; eight grandchildren: Kim (Derek) Robey, Brian Steele, Karla (Brent) Plender, Tonya Pacella, Tyler (Jessica) Steele and David, Michael and Matthew Broderick. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren: Alex Robey, Kirstin and Kayla Bass, Alec Pacella, Morgan, Micah and Makenna Plender and Brea Steele, her sister Catherine Brose of Longmont, CO; sisters-in-law: Delores Leno and Edith Croll Hermann and brother-in-law Stewart (Evelyn Merritt) Steele.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth in 2003, infant daughter Emilie, three brothers: Edward, Fred and Daniel and six sisters: Emelia, Eva, Hattie, Alvina, Pauline and Clara.
