Obituary

Eugene O. Holm, 88, of Tulare, SD, died Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Bethany Retirement Home in Fargo, ND. His funeral will be Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. Reverend Brian Wasmoen will officiate. After a time for lunch and fellowship, the burial will be in the Tulare Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Gene was born on Feb. 19, 1922, in Watertown, S.D., the son of Edwin and Clara (Thompson) Holm. When Gene was a child, the family moved from Bruce S.D. to Tulare, S.D., where he attended school, graduated, and served as a rural mail carrier for greater than 45 years. He attended Augustana College; Sioux Falls, S.D. and the University of S. Dakota, before being called to serve in the army in W.W. II in 1944. He returned home from war and met the love of his life, Wilma Christiansen. They were married on Aug. 26, 1951 and spent 45 happy years together, until Wilma's death in 1997. Together, they raised three children, Mark (Ann) Holm; North Oaks, MN, Allen (Joan Fargen-Holm) Holm; Sioux Falls, SD, and Mary Kaye (Chip Ross) Holm; Fargo,ND.

Gene was a dedicated father, grandfather, husband and friend. He loved to attend the athletic and musical events of his grandchildren, of his hometown's Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots, and of Moorhead, MN's Concordia College Cobbers. He served as organist at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Redfield, SD, for greater than 30 years and enjoyed men's Bible study groups in Redfield and at Riverview Health, Fargo, ND. He was a lifelong member of the local American Legion and Lions Club.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his only sister, Doris Eisle. He is survived by his three children, 8 grandchildren and many friends and neighbors in his supportive home community of Tulare, SD.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
