Frank Burns was born May 8, 1928 in Springfield, MA to Martin and Grace (Thomas) Burns. Frank was raised in Springfield and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and was honorably discharged in 1951. He married Alice Scannell on December 2, 1946. To this union was born a daughter, Patricia, in 1948. After Frank's discharge, they lived in New Jersey a short time before moving to the Waterloo, NY area where Frank worked three jobs to support his family. Alice passed away in January of 1981.
Frank met Pearl Joyce Getman and fell in love with her and her six children. They married and when life in New York became difficult, they moved with many other family members to the Redfield area in September of 1994. They enjoyed life on the farm and made many friends. When their health declined, they moved into an apartment in Redfield and then into the Golden Living Center. He remained devoted to Pearl until her death in November of 2013.
Frank enjoyed fishing, playing cards and reading. He was an extremely patriotic man who loved his country and was proud to serve. He was active with the Waterloo American Legion and was a member of both the Color Guard and Honor Guard which served the northeastern United States. He worked for the U.S. Post Office for 28 years. He had a kind spirit, could be stubborn and direct but had a very generous nature. He and Pearl devoted many hours of service to the Good Samaritan Center in Redfield and for many years, they grew pumpkins to donate to local school children. He will be remembered most for his unconditional love for Pearl and his children.
Frank is survived by his children: Patricia Burns Fish of Aberdeen, SD, Ivan White of Redfield, Nicholas White of Redfield, Ronald (Donna) White of North Carolina, Alan White of Waterloo, NY, Judson (Robin White) Luffman of Waterloo, NY and Bonnie White of Doland, SD; his grandsons: Robert Miller of Aberdeen and Michael Miller of North Carolina; his granddaughter: Alicia Fish of Florida; and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives: Alice Scannell and Pearl Getman and his sister, Barbara.
Frank's family requests no flowers and wishes donations to be made to St. Bernard Catholic Church or the Good Samaritan Center in his name.
