Francis “Frank” Ernest Dvorak, 86, of Redfield, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Redfield Community Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 28, 1940, to Francis “Frank” and Bessie (Klebsch) Dvorak, Frank developed a love for the outdoors at an early age—a passion that would shape much of his life. On July 8, 1959, he married the love of his life, Ruth. Together they built a life farming north of Ashton, where they raised their family. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. Nearly 11 years ago, they retired to Redfield.

Frank was happiest in the outdoors. Hunting was far more than a pastime—it was woven into the fabric of his life. His adventures took him throughout the Midwest and Northwest, as well as to Canada, Alaska, Australia, and Africa in pursuit of game and unforgettable experiences. His Redfield home became affectionately known as his “museum,” where friends, neighbors, and even residents from the Eastern Star Home would stop by to admire his collection and hear the stories behind each trophy. Every mount had a story, and Frank was always happy to tell it.

He was equally well known for his quick wit, his mischievous sense of humor, and his gift for storytelling. Whether around the kitchen table or at hunting camp, Frank could keep everyone laughing. Many who knew him will forever remember his famous rubber band trick and the annual April Fool’s Day reveal of the “finger in the box,” which delighted—and fooled—generation after generation. Time spent with Frank usually ended with a smile and often a story that grew just a little better with each telling.

Above all else, Frank was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; his children, Francis Wayne (Penny), Mark (Tracey), Laurie, and Willie (Julie); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister, Patty Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bessie Dvorak, and his sister, Marilyn Norwood.

A Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Dvorak family home, 222 West 12th Avenue, Redfield, South Dakota. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield.

Though his family will miss him deeply, they find comfort in imagining Frank walking the happy hunting grounds, where the stories are endless, the game is plentiful, and every day is opening day. His adventurous spirit, infectious laughter, and love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
