Fred W. Lawrence, 91, of Florence, SD and formerly of rural Doland, SD died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Country View Assisted Living in Florence. His memorial service will be Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Doland. Reverend Grace Rhodes will officiate. Fred was born July 4, 1918 in Doland to Clark and Mabel (Felderman) Lawrence. He grew up in the Doland area and graduated from Doland High School in 1935. He served in the United States Army Air Force. After his discharge, Fred farmed south of Doland and moved hay for many area neighbors and farmers. Fred married Margaret "Peggy" Hoffman Hajak on July 9, 1954 in Huron and they lived on the farm until they moved into Huron in 1997. Fred helped many young men start out in farming including his brother Art. Fred and Art have always been close, but Art will not be able to attend the funeral due to unforeseen circumstances.

He was a member of the ASCS county committee office from 1974-1983.

Fred was an avid reader and loved to solve crossword puzzles

Fred is survived by his brother Art (Dorothea) Lawrence of Watertown, SD; his step daughter Fay (Tal) Lockwood of Rapid City, SD, his nieces and nephews: Carmel Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD; Charlie Lawrence of Nixa, MO; and Casey (Jan) Lawrence of Watertown, SD; his step grandchildren: Kim, Scott, Steven, Kelly and Thomas Lockwood; and his step great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy in 2002.
