Obituary

Galen Campbell, age 70, of Redfield, SD passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD.  Galen's final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.  His private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield with his burial taking place at a later date.  Reverend John Short will officiate.

Visitation, with his family present, will be from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, with a prayer service at 6pm.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home.  (www.hykefuneralhome.com)

Galen Francis Campbell was born November 27, 1951, in Miller, SD to Leslie and Hazel (Benz) Campbell.  He graduated from Redfield High School in May of 1970.  On October 23, 1971, Galen married his soulmate, Betty Ruschenberg at St. Ann Catholic Church in Frankfort, SD.  Galen and Betty were inseparable, celebrating their 50th anniversary in October of this year.

After 32 years of service, Galen retired from South Dakota Wheat Growers in 2007.  He then worked as a rural mail carrier for a few years, transferred cars for Shawn Chase Ford, and did some voluntary grounds keeping for Fisher Grove State Park.

Galen was an avid Vikings fan, golf was his favorite pastime, and he loved to travel; indulging in every dessert along the way!  He enjoyed following local sports, watching Michelle and Jamie through their high school years, and in later years his grandchildren's activities; giving Jaxen golfing tips along the way!

Grateful for having been a part of Galen's life are his wife of 50 years, Betty of Redfield, SD; daughters: Michelle (Terry) Fry of Wayne, NE and Meghan Ruschenberg of Sioux Falls, SD; a son Jamie (TJ) Campbell of Frankfort, SD, and their children: McKenzie (Eric) Van Wagner of Redfield SD, Sierra (Logan) Redlin of Watertown, SD, Mallori Campbell & fiancé Kaidyn Eaton of Redfield, SD, and Jaxen Campbell of Frankfort, SD.  He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Avery and Briggs Van Wagner; sisters: Sharen (Dave) Alden and Karen (Larry) Evans; and sisters-in-law: Laurie (Gary) Buckendahl and Tricia (Roger Flint) Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Hazel Campbell; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Dot Ruschenberg; brothers-in-law: James (Buddy) Ruschenberg, Danny Ruschenberg, and Brad Davis; and sister in-law Virgie Ruschenberg.
