Gary L. Schlegel, 64, of Redfield, SD died Friday, April 1, 2011 in Rapid City, SD.

Gary was cremated and his memorial service will be Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational UCC Church in Redfield. Reverend Tim Fugman will officiate.

Gary was born January 4, 1947 to Robert and Bernice (Runestad) Schlegel in Pierre, SD. He grew up in the Harold and Pierre area. He attended country school before he started working on the family farm. He later worked for Canon Farms and other area farmers, before driving gravel truck for many years. Gary moved to Redfield and married Mildred Remilard on May 6, 1994. They lived in Redfield and attended First Congregational UCC Church. Mildred died in 2003. Gary enjoyed traveling and met Elvira Nowell, whom he enjoyed traveling with and having her as his companion.

Gary enjoyed rodeoing, dancing, NASCAR and watching PBR on television.

Gary is survived by his parents: Robert and Bernice Schlegel, his friend Elvira Nowell of Huron, his sisters and brother: Janie (Mike) Gregg of Cloquet, MN; Mavis (Don) Ludeman of Redfield; Mary Kay (Terry) Jandel of Redfield; Sharon (Terry) Shantz of Redfield; Gale (Nora) Schlegel of Highmore, SD; and Debbie (Lyn) Peters of Killdeer, ND and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, his sister Patricia Hayes and his nephew JR Schlegel.
