Gerald "Jerry" F. Hansen, 82, of Redfield, SD passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with ALS. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service and a time to share starting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. The family will be present during this time to accept condolences.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Redfield. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield. Reverend Brian Wasmoen will officiate.
The family recommends masks and social distancing at the funeral home and the church. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral service will be live-streamed to the funeral home's website (www.hykefuneralhome.com). Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
Gerald F. Hansen was born May 21, 1938 in Aberdeen, SD, to F. Milton "Milt" and Violet (Walberg) Hansen. Jerry attended school in Redfield, graduating from Redfield High School in 1956. He attended college at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business.
Jerry married Angela D. Leesch on July 27, 1963 in Redfield, SD. They were happily married for 57 years and raised four daughters. He served in the SD National Guard for six years. Jerry worked alongside his father and brother, Harley, at Hansen Motor Company where he worked in many different capacities during his 50 plus years as an auto dealer.
Faith was very important to Jerry as was spending time with his family. He attended many of his daughters' music and sporting events and loved spending time camping, fishing, enjoying music, working on automobiles, fixing any-and-all things possible, collecting antiques, volunteering in several organizations in the community, donating countless hours keeping the vintage firetrucks running for the museum, visiting with family and friends, and helping most anyone who asked.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Angela; four daughters, Marcia (Daniel) Mueller of IA, Beverly (Thomas) Bennert of MI, Melanie (Robert) Schraeder of CO, and Brenda (Scott) Osborn of SD; ten grandchildren, Michael (Rachel) Mueller, Matthew (Meghan Nelson) Mueller, Jacob Mueller, Katherine Bennert, Nicholas Bennert, Kendra Schraeder, Nathan Schraeder, Lauren Schraeder, Jarod Osborn, and Ryan Osborn; three great-grandchildren, Elijah, Evelyn, and Benjamin Mueller; his brother, Donald (Shirley) Hansen, of CA and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, F. Milton and Violet Hansen; his brother and sister-in-law, Harley and Connie Hansen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed by the family to ALS organizations and the Spink County Historical Society.
