Gerard Paul Gabriel, 87, of Redfield, SD passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Due to the pandemic and out of respect for front-line workers and safety for all, the family will cherish Gerard's memory with a private family Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020. Interment will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield. Reverend John Short will officiate.
Masks and social distancing are required for family members at the church. The Mass will be live-streamed at 2:00 p.m. on Friday to the funeral home's website under Gerard's obituary for those who wish to attend virtually. Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield has been entrusted with arrangements (www.hykefuneralhome.com). A tribute video will be uploaded to Gerard's obituary on the funeral home website next week.
Gerard Paul Gabriel was born in Hosmer, SD to Peter and Elizabeth (Imbery) Gabriel on October 3rd, 1933. Gerard attended school in Hillsview, SD where he resided, and worked the family farm with his father. Gerard then moved to Eureka, SD in the 1950's where he managed the family-owned Dakota Hotel and Restaurant. In 1959, he married Edith Carr in Redfield. They lived in Eureka and moved to the Aberdeen area in 1963. Then in 1975, Gerard and Edith moved to Redfield where he worked for the Dakota Hatchery. He retired from the City of Redfield at age 64. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church.
Gerard enjoyed walking, camping, traveling, working in the yard, listening to old time and country music, and spending time with his family and friends. He loved spending time in the Black Hills and Colorado with his family and at the cabin in Hot Springs, SD. Gerard also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sports events.
Gerard is survived by his wife Edith; daughters: Linda Fuss (Steven Runnings) of Denver, CO; Donna Bourdon of Redfield, SD; Carol (Maurice) Cotton of Piedmont, SD; Kimberly (Donavon) Whitley of Frankfort, SD; and Kristina (Robert) Lambert of Spearfish, SD; grandchildren: Rustin Fuss (Jessica Baiza), Casie Cotton, Jessie (Candi) Cotton, Melissa Bourdon, Nikiah (John) Hamilton, Riley Whitley, Nicole Lambert (Tim Benting), Alison (Clayton) Odland, Ryan (Jennifer) Lambert; and eight great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother Quentin Gabriel of West Virginia; sister Shirley Dornbusch of Sioux Falls, SD; and sister-in-law Arlene Gabriel of Loveland, CO; as well as his brother-in-law Frank (Sarah) Carr; sister-in-law Joann Huber; and brother-in-law Clinton (Audrey) Carr, all of Redfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leroy, sisters-in-law: Grace Gabriel, Janet Marsh, and Alice Carr; and brothers-in-law: Duane Carr, Virgil Dornbusch, and Mike Huber.
