Gladys Irene was born October 3, 1914 in Aberdeen, SD to Arthur W. and Hilda (Hanson) Larson. She was about eight years old when her mother became ill. She lived with several relatives, and when her father remarried, he took her to the Beresford, SD Children's Home to live. She credits the home for the teaching her discipline and integrity, and for her faith in Jesus Christ and in Eternal Life. When she was 16 she was selected by Gust and Amanda Johnson to live with them on a farm near Frankfort, SD. She attended high school in Frankfort until her senior year, which she attended at Redfield High School and graduated in 1933.
She married Harold L. Marlow later that year. Sons, Jim and Allan, were born in Redfield. In 1936, the family moved to Gary, IN where Harold found work in the steel mills. Kay and Larry were born in Gary. In 1941, the family returned to South Dakota and they farmed the Johnson place south of Frankfort on the James River, then operated a restaurant and eventually a grocery store in Frankfort. In 1952 the family moved to Redfield.
Gladys worked at Woodwards and then for twenty years at the local ASCS office. Gladys and Harold enjoyed each others company fishing, camping, and traveling. Harold passed away in 1997.
Gladys was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church for seventy-eight years, a charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed quilting at the church for many years, and she was a member of the Redfield Red Hats.
Gladys is survived by her three sons: Harold James "Jim" of Rapid City, SD, Allan Arthur of Huron, SD and Larry William of South Lake Tahoe, CA; one daughter Kay Irene Green of Redfield, SD. There are also eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, two brothers: Delmar and Ray Larson, a granddaughter Deanna Tompkins.
