Obituary

Gladys (Muellenberg) Kempe, 90, of Redfield, SD passed away Monday, August 7, 2017 at the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield.  Reverend Tom Anderson will officiate.  Burial will follow in the St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield, SD.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 9th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at the Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home. Thelen-Hyke Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.  (www.thelen-hykefuneralhome.com)


Gladys Mary Kempe was born in Zell on February 19, 1927 to Julius and Agnes (Muellenberg) Jablinske. Upon her mother's death in her infancy, she was placed into the loving care of her uncle and aunt, Edward and Laura Muellenberg, who then became her true parents. She attended school in the Zell Area and graduated from Redfield High School in 1945. On February 26, 1946, she married Roland Kempe in Zell. To this union, 5 children were born.

Gladys and Roland farmed north of Ashton.  She worked in the Redfield Area her entire life and enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, baking, gardening, and canning. Gladys was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Known for her kind heart and her hard work, Gladys was a rock for many family members and friends.

Gladys is survived by her children: Ronald (Millie) Kempe of Bradenton, FL and Kevin (Becky) Kempe of Black Hawk, SD; her sister Irma (Marlin) Stammer of Redfield; and her brother Edward "Bud" (Joyce) Muellenberg of Green Bay, WI.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
