Gloria Fay Roos of Redfield, SD, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side at Avantara Redfield, on Friday, December 15, 2023.
A visitation will be held at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield on Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 22, 2023, with Father John Short officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield. Lunch will then be served in the church hall. Gloria's Prayer Service and Mass will both be live-streamed on the funeral home's website below her obituary. Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com) has been entrusted with arrangements.
Gloria Fay Blume was born June 23, 1942, to Everett and May (Masat) Blume. She grew up on the family farm southeast of Redfield. She attended a rural country school and graduated from Tulare High School. She married John Roos in Redfield on September 20, 1960. To their union, 3 children were born.
She was a farm wife until her youngest started school; then, she became a certified food service manager for Tulare schools and later added Sieglings deli to her schedule. After retiring from Tulare schools, she worked as a cook at the South Dakota Developmental Center until she took a cooking job at Eastern Star Home in Redfield. She and John baked and decorated cakes and cupcakes of all kinds for about 30 years; until May 2009, when she suffered a brainstem aneurysm.
She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and taught CCD classes for 12 years. Family was very important to Gloria. She enjoyed attending the children's ball games, FHA, FFA, and other events, in addition to fishing with John.
She is survived by her loving husband, John of Redfield, and children Sheryl (Kevin) Oliver of Sioux Falls, SD, Loretta Haring of Odenton, Maryland, and Daryl (Connie) Roos of Tulare, SD. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren (plus 2 on the way), 1 great-great-grandchild, brother Gordon (Thordys) Blume of Redfield as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gary, and her son-in-law, Scott Haring.
