Obituary

Harold Stevens, 87, of Mellette, SD, died Sunday, February 23, 2014 at his home in Mellette. His funeral service will be Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church in Redfield. Pastor Josh Kendrick will officiate. Burial will be Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. MDT in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. Visitation will be Thursday, from 10-11:00 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church. www.thelenfuneralhome.com Harold Stevens was born in Brooklyn, New York, July 27, 1926. Harold proudly served during WWII in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, and then in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1949. Harold was deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, and earned the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal and the European Theatre Medal with 1 star. After the war, he served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam serving from 1950 until her retired from military service as a SSGT/E-5 in 1969. During his military career, he and his family were stationed in various air bases in the United States and Germany. He met Ruth Meyer in Rapid City. They were married in 1954. Harold and Ruth resided in Forbes, ND, from 1971 to 1984, and then moved to Mellette, SD. His hobbies included electronics, cameras, ham radio, and big band recordings. Harold especially enjoyed listening to the Glen Miller and his big band orchestra, and also classical and gospel recordings. Harold is survived by his wife Ruth, of Redfield, SD; four children, Jonathan & BethAnne (Golly) Stevens of Oskaloosa, IA, Frederick Stevens of Rochester, MN, Ramona Stevens of Redfield, SD, and Eric Stevens of Victoria, TX; two grandchildren Andrew Stevens and his wife Yannan Sun of Richland, WA and Allison (Stevens) Rhoulhac and her husband Gregory Rhoulac and two great grandchildren Neal Stevens and Sarai Rhoulhac. Harold was preceded in death by his parents.,
